Hello Darlings! I’m sitting here on a very rainy day, actually so happy it’s raining, because it isn’t 90 degrees outside. I know a lot of people aren’t ready for fall yet; cooler temperatures, schoolwork if you’re in school, the threat of snow later in the year. I totally get it; but I LOVE autumn. It’s my absolute favorite time of year. The smell of crisp air, nature all around you, glorious weather that you can spend hours outdoors in. For August, I’ve been thinking about style ideas that aren’t quite for Autumn, but aren’t quite for Summer either. Using pieces that are weather appropriate while it’s still warm during the day, but can survive a little crisp air at night. I found a cute floral print skirt from Tobi that I think suits the still-summer-weather quite well, but also makes the transition to autumn easier. Lately, I’ve also been working on adding some whimsical elements to my everyday style, and I’m loving it! I think the key with whimsical or kitschy pieces is to keep things looking grown up with the right colors and accessories. Keep reading to see how I styled this fun look with lots of bold graphic elements.
Kitsch. When I think of this word as it relates to fashion, I think of fun. I know some people relate it to ‘gaudy’ or ‘tacky’, but to me, it means graphic prints, fun animal shapes, all around ‘cute’ things. It’s a little wacky, or nerdy, but it works. I’m really feeling a kitsch-cool-feminine style lately, and some 60’s inspiration as well. Not necessarily mod, but I’m really loving short and flared or pleated skirts in particular. That’s why when I saw this skirt from Tobi I knew it fit that style perfectly. Plus, it’s really affordable at $46.00 normally, and right now its 50% off. Tobi specializes in on trend pieces for women and constantly updates their stock with new items. They also bring a west-coast cool vibe to the mix of online shopping, which I love.
When I think of my personal style, it’s a little bit of a whole lot of things. I’ve been through many ‘style phases’; I think it’s part of being an artist or creative person. A little boho here, a little cool hipster book reader there..you get the point. Now, I like to think that my style has become a happy mix of all those things that I love. As I’m getting older, I’m also really enjoying adding classic pieces to my closet. When I saw this skirt, I knew instantly that I’d be able to wear it with so many things I already have, and to me, that’s a piece worth having. For this outfit, I paired it with this adorable dog sweater from J. Crew, a Kate Spade Bag, and my favorite Ted Baker Sneakers. It has the feminine look I’m after, but my accessories keep the look fun and whimsical. I love this outfit for the autumn transition as well; its light and cool, but I could easily wear this again with a jacket or tights when the weather gets chilly. This sweater is great too because it’s lightweight, so it could easily work well with a blazer or pencil skirt too. I think the key with bold graphic prints or embroidery like this one is to keep the color palette relatively simple, and then one element doesn’t take over the whole look. It stays really well put together, but it’s so fun, and your outfit will always be a conversation piece!
I really am not someone that buys new handbags all the time. Honestly, they are probably my least favorite ‘fashion’ thing. Being a long time vegetarian, it make’s it difficult, because I don’t want to constantly buy leather handbags, but the fake leather ones are often bad quality and the materials are terrible for the environment. That’s why I stick to the premise of only having a few handbags. This one from Kate Spade is leather, but the quality is excellent, so I know I will have it for years. I also really only use it a few times a year because the flamingos are special, and I like to keep it for special outfits. It was a design from last year, but I’ll link you all some similar styles. My shoes from Ted Baker also aren’t the newest style, but he always offers a few sneaker styles so I’ll link you all some similar ones. I think sneakers were perfect for this look because it’s casual, yet the shoes still have dressy elements. I think Ted Baker does that look really well, and the shoes are fabulous quality too.
I love the watercolor style of this print on the skirt, and I think there’s just so many things I can wear this with. I think it will look perfect with a loose, chunky white sweater for winter, with tights and boots, and I can’t wait to try that out. Sizing wise, the skirt comes XS-L. I am wearing a small, although I could have also taken a medium and I do wear a size 2. The small is tight on me, but fits. So just keep that in mind when you’re ordering! It is such a cute piece, and I think would really become a fun staple in any closet. The fabric is structured as well, so it holds the flare shape perfectly. The black and pink colors also mean it can really work for any season, and I am all about all season dressing. I think the print is classic, but also is fun and when paired with other prints or cute graphic elements as I’ve done with this outfit, it has a whimsical and fun vibe that will always get people talking.
When it comes to personal style, I don’t think there is necessarily a formula for success. I believe it’s really important to wear things that ultimately make you happy. Also, buy things that speak to you, don’t just get them because they’re trendy right now. For me lately, that has been adding an element of whimsy and fun to my every day looks, and I think this outfit does just that. I’m not really reading any fashion magazines or listening to what people say is stylish. I’m only getting things I really love, and that make me smile. It’s important to experiment with style, but also to buy pieces that you know you won’t just wear once and toss out. For me, that is such a crucial element to buying new clothes. How many times will I really wear this? Can I think of 5 things I already own that I would wear this with. And I think with this skirt and this sweater, I could think of about 10 ways to wear each piece, and that’s when you know they’re perfect for you. I hope this post makes you all inspired to add some fun elements to your every day style, and never be afraid to wear a conversation piece like a bold printed skirt or graphic top. Be whimsical, have fun with style, and life will be a lot more fun too.
